Eraserhead as Subconscious Images

Conjured Images

David Lynch is a filmmaker who has changed the way I do art. Specifically, his debut film, Eraserhead, challenged me to look into myself and allow my own subconscious to conjure images that I can use as ideas. That discovery is what birthed this video. This video was the first attempt at a new philosophy of blending video art and analytical video essays together, in an effort to embolden those arguments with artistic merit. I figured, why just talk about these conjured images, when I can show you them by including some in the actual video? So, half the video acts as a typical analytical essay, and half acts as an experimental short film pulling back the facade of being online. This is an effort to use another artist as inspiration to be more abstract with conveying ideas, and this video has been foundational in finding my own voice and style in artmaking.

In the beginning of this video you will see a short clip of my head looking around as a cloud of scratches moves above me. This effect is done with a process I have experimented with that involves shooting 24 frames on 35mm photographic film, and physically altering the film to create an effect. While much of my work is so digitally enhanced, to be able to incorporate a more traditional medium broadens my capabilities as an artist, and allows for more dynamic ways of achieving what I want to achieve in a video.
